Northern Expressions: The Right Investments

Investments in marriage, family, and success at work are almost certain to pay off.

Happy Friday, friends!

Today’s Northern Expression comes from Helaine Olen & Harold Pollack in The Index Card:

Your time is valuable. Your happiness and economic security depend on your marriage, your family, your success at work and in your relationships. Investments in those areas are almost certain to pay off.

Every choice you make with your money or your time is an investment. If you invest too much time into something, you inevitably neglect another. Make sure your life asset allocations align with your priorities.

It’s possible to be economically secure AND happy. This balance requires prioritizing. You vote for your priorities with your time and your money. Vote wisely.

Love, Maggie

  1. Ahhh, yes. And I am really, really great at the work stuff. I’m trying to balance out the other things, too. I fear I’ve been a rather sucky daughter and wife lately. That’s the major drawback to loving your work so much.

I vacillate. Lately, I’ve been TERRIBLE at the work stuff. But the family is in a really good place. 🙂

  2. Love this! Work on your family, marriage and relationships is very important.

Great message! Vote wisely indeed. This rings particularly strong for me as work life balance has been a bit out of whack lately. Hopefully that’ll be rectified soon and the holidays will be devoted entirely to family and friends!

I feel on the flip side… my work is suffering because I’m having a fabulous time with my family. 🙂 But I feel pretty good about it (despite making very little money since I work hourly!)

Even if we just focus on these areas in life, I’m sure it’ll be a very amazing life!

I’ve heard it said that the best retirement plan is “one house, one spouse.” Divorce is more financially catastrophic than almost anything else in life, so focusing on a healthy, happy marriage is the best thing we can do.
We’ll enjoy a wonderful relationship and appreciate each day together, AND be able to do it with financial security. Win-win.
